COLISEUM OF COMICS: We’ve seen Terry interact with the modern day DCU, notably for Future’s End. With Batman Beyond being a part of Rebirth, does the story still take place in future Gotham?
DAN JURGENS: Absolutely. Terry is very much a part of the the world of the future and that’s really the best place place for the story to take place. There’s something about future Gotham that is really quite enticing. Lots of fun stuff to play with there.
COLISEUM: Batman Beyond has had a number of starting points over the past few years. What would you say makes this Rebirth jumping-on point different? What makes this run more accessible to new readers than the previous series?
JURGENS: Rebirth is all about finding out what the most important part of these characters are and honing in on it.
With that in mind, it’s perfectly natural for Terry McGinnis to be back in the batsuit.
As for making it accessible to new readers, that’s something I’m always very keen on. That’ll be no different here.
The idea is to reintroduce the characters in a strong way and get the story moving in a way that feels fresh.
COLISEUM: Batman has had an ensemble of family members help him out over the years. Even though they all use similar gadgets and fight similar villains they all have their own defining characteristics that differentiate one from another. For those unfamiliar with Terry McGinnis, what differentiates him from the rest of the Batman Family?
JURGENS: I think one of the most interesting things about Terry is that he bypassed being Robin and went straight to being Batman, even though he was just a high school kid.
Most everyone else had a chance to learn, in action, under Batman.
Terry certainly got some coaching from Batman, but the only because Bruce Wayne was in his ear via the communications system.
COLISEUM: For a comic reader who has never picked up a Batman Beyond comic, what would you tell them about the series to convince them to give it a read?
JURGENS: It’s Gotham City, 30-40 years from now, with a very young, fresh Batman.
Whereas the modern day Gotham had one Joker, this new world of the future has thousands, as the Jokerz are trying to take over the city and make it theirs.
And if they happen to bring the Joker back from the dead, so much the better.
COLISEUM: Lastly, what is your favorite title you’re reading right now?
JURGENS: Right now, one book I’m enjoying the heck out of is “Stray Bullets”. It’s such a unique piece of work and it’s great to have it back. David Lapham has built a series that is so amazingly his own that it’s one of those rare examples where the creator is the series and the series is the creator.
