COLISEUM OF COMICS: For those who don’t know what Revolution is, what can you tell them about the crossover?

CULLEN BUNN: Think about all the great characters that fall under the Hasbro umbrella. The Transformers, G. I. Joe, ROM, M.A.S.K., the Micronauts! All of these properties have their own exciting back stories and histories. Well, in Revolution, all of those ideas collide in a huge way. During this series, we’ll discover that these characters exist in the same world. We’ll see how their histories and futures are intertwined, and we’ll establish a huge shared universe from this point forward.

COLISEUM: You’ve been writing the new Micronauts series and it looks like they’ll be playing a significant role in Revolution, can you tell us a little more about their role in the event?

BUNN: The Micronauts are an interesting part of Revolution. Unlike the Transformers or G.I.Joe, who exist on Earth, the Micronauts live in Microspace, a universe set apart from our own. But what we’ll soon discover is that the history of Microspace is tied closely to the history of some of the other characters in Revolution. This will draw the Micronauts into our world, which will be fun because they are so much smaller than we are! And after Revolution, we might be seeing the Micronauts adventuring around Earth for a little while!

COLISEUM: When writing an event like this, how do you and the other writers of the series and tie-ins coordinate between each other?

BUNN: IDW brought us all out for a summit to talk the events of this series out, to figure out how each series would be connected to Revolution and how they would compliment the story, and to plan for the future. The plans went way beyond the events of the comic book series. There are lots of exciting things in the works.

COLISEUM: You’re sort of known for your intricate and detailed plotting. How much of that is playing into this new series?

BUNN: Well, my head works how my head works. There’s not much I can do about that. Sometimes I do try and simplify things or make them more linear, but I don’t really worry about it. I absolutely have faith in the reader being able to keep up.

COLISEUM: IDW has run a few events in the past that have spanned across Ghostbusters, D&D and other properties. What makes Revolution different?

BUNN: I think the big difference here is that Revolution is establishing a shared universe. This isn’t just an event that will come and go. From this point forward, it will be apparent and important that these stories are taking place in one universe.

COLISEUM: What do you and other writers and creators look at to decide which titles to include in an event like this?

BUNN: We worked really hard at making this “merging” of the various titles seem seamless. The titles we included all play into that and help us explain and highlight various aspects of the shared universe.

COLISEUM: What would you tell comic fans to convince them to read Revolution?

BUNN: This is your chance to get in on the ground floor with a brand new shared universe, to see how the Hasbro world will take shape. So many stories will be spinning out of this. It really is the staging ground for the future.

COLISEUM: Lastly, you’re known for writing multiple series at once, sometimes for several different publishers at a time, do you find it’s hard to switch gears and get back into the narrative of a particular book?

BUNN: Not really. I like the variety of the different books, and it is nice to change the narrative style from one project to the next. It keeps things interesting!

The REVOLUTION begins September 14th.
